What to see in Fortaleza
The main tourist attractions of Fortaleza are its beaches and some buildings in the historical centre.
Beira Mar
The extensive shoreline of Beira Mar is one of the most popular areas among tourists. It is home to many beach resorts and of the artisanal market of the city.
Praia do Futuro
Praia do Futuro, located in the south area of Fortaleza, is the most beautiful beach of the city and houses the best organized bathing establishments. Among these stands out Croco Beach, which offers live music every day, swimming pools and an excellent self-service restaurant with meat and fish barbecue.
Theatro Jose de Alencar
The Theatro José de Alencar, dedicated to the famous writer originary of Ceará and built in 1910, is the symbol of the city. Of particular interest is its iron facade built in Scotland. Guided tours of the theatre are possible during the day while at night you can attend here interesting musical and theatrical performances.
Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção
Built in 1649 by the Dutch, this fortress which gave name to the city is today home to a military barracks. However, it is possible to take a free guided tour which includes its ancient prisons and a museum.
Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura

Cathedral
Built in 1699, Fortaleza Cathedral is dedicated to São José (St. Joseph), the patron saint of Ceara. The cathedral was the subject of a subsequent reconstruction.
Museu do Cearà
The Museu do Ceará, located in downtown Fortaleza is open from Tuesday to Sunday and owns interesting collections of indigenous anthropology.
Museu da Cachaça - YPark
Located 30 km from Fortaleza, in the small town of Maranguape, this museum is dedicated to the history of cachaça, the popular Brazilian spirit produced from sugar cane.
Beach Park
